This lightly sweet mashed sweet potato recipe highlights the natural flavor of the potatoes and is finished with spiced pecans—the same irresistible kind you might find at a fair. It’s a holiday-worthy side that uses far less sugar than a traditional sweet potato casserole while still feeling special on the table.
Traditional family recipes sometimes pack in a lot of sugar. My grandma’s version calls for more than two cups of sugar, which is sweeter than many desserts. I wanted a version that retained the warm holiday spices and crunchy topping but allowed the sweet potatoes themselves to shine, so I reduced the sugar and added maple syrup for a more balanced sweetness.
The result is Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Spiced Pecans: creamy, gently sweet mashed potatoes topped with crunchy, aromatic pecans.

The sweet potatoes are boiled until tender, then mashed with melted butter, warmed half-and-half, vanilla, and just 1/3 cup of maple syrup. The result is a bowl of potatoes that’s sweet enough to be comforting but not cloying—so the root vegetable’s flavor stays front and center.
The spiced pecans are the star for many people. They’re coated with an egg white and a spice-sugar mixture—dark brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and a pinch of kosher salt—then baked until toasted and crunchy. The egg white helps the spices cling so each pecan gets an even, caramelized coating.

As the pecans toast in the oven, they fill the kitchen with a wonderful aroma. The recipe uses a generous amount of pecans relative to the potatoes, so expect a crunchy, spiced topping that contrasts nicely with the creamy mash. Note that the pecans will seem slightly soft right out of the oven but will harden as they cool—don’t worry if they feel tacky at first.
Altogether the recipe keeps total added sugar low—about two-thirds of a cup for the whole dish—making it less sweet than many traditional holiday sides.

I served these mashed sweet potatoes with spiced pecans as part of a Thanksgiving menu. They pair especially well with roasted turkey and classic sides.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Spiced Pecans
Ingredients
For the sweet potatoes:
- 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1/3 cup maple syrup
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1½ cups half and half, warmed slightly
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the spiced pecans:
- 2 cups pecan halves
- 1 egg white
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/3 cup dark brown sugar
- 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 300°F. In a large bowl, whisk the egg white until frothy (about 20 seconds). Stir in the vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt. Add the pecan halves and toss gently to coat.
- Spread the pecans in a single layer on a parchment-lined sheet pan. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Break up any clumps and let the pecans cool completely; they will harden as they cool.
- Meanwhile, place the sweet potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook about 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Drain well.
- Add the drained potatoes to a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or mash by hand). Add the maple syrup, melted butter, warmed half-and-half, and vanilla. Mix on low until smooth and combined, about 1–2 minutes.
- Transfer the mashed sweet potatoes to a serving dish and top with the spiced pecans. Serve immediately.
Notes
Both components can be made 1–2 days ahead. Reheat the mashed sweet potatoes gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring until warmed through. Store cooled spiced pecans in a sealed bag at room temperature and add them just before serving to preserve their crunch.
