Dad’s Dalgona Coffee recipe helped make whipped coffee one of the biggest home-brew trends during lockdown. Also known as Dalgona or whipped coffee, this silky, frothy drink captured social feeds worldwide.
People fell for this upside-down latte — a drink often linked to Korea — because it’s simple, visually striking, and surprisingly satisfying.

An upside-down latte
Dalgona Coffee is essentially the reverse of a classic latte. Instead of topping espresso with frothed milk, you whip instant coffee, sugar, and hot water into a dense foam and spoon it over milk. Instant coffee is the best and most consistent ingredient for creating the stable, velvety foam that defines this drink.
Easier with a mixer
If you own a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, this recipe is extremely easy. Combine 2 tablespoons instant coffee, 2 tablespoons white sugar, and 2 tablespoons boiling water in the mixer bowl. Whisk on high for 3–4 minutes, or until the mixture becomes thick and forms stiff peaks — meaning it clings to the whisk and holds its shape when turned upside down.

Other methods
If you don’t have a stand mixer, a hand mixer works well too. You can even whisk by hand, though it will take more effort and time. The key is patience: keep whipping until the mixture becomes light, glossy, and holds stiff peaks.
