Revive Faded Quilts with OxiClean: Fabric Cleaning Guide

Do you have quilt makers in your family? I enjoy crafting, but I don’t have the patience to make the beautiful quilts my mother makes. She loves quilting and has made one for each of my children. One year she gave us a giant king-size log cabin quilt for our bed.

I still have the baby quilt my grandmother made for me, and I’m turning 40 this year. I used it with each of my children and I treasure it, hoping to pass it down to future generations.

This is my grandmother. She was endlessly creative — sewing her own clothes, making dolls, and always crocheting. She taught me to crochet and to play gin rummy. She passed away before I was married, but I keep her memory alive by telling my children about her.

A few months ago I found my five-year-old sitting on my baby quilt in the living room with a chocolate fudge pop. She was having a picnic and, before I could stop her, used the quilt to wipe her hands. I immediately washed it, but the stains wouldn’t come out.

I knew there had to be a solution, so I decided to soak the quilt in OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover and see if it would work. I had heard good things about it.

OxiClean™ comes as a powder that activates in water and works best in warm or hot temperatures. It releases oxygen bubbles that target stains without harming most fabrics, making it effective on water-washable clothing, carpets, and many household surfaces. It’s particularly useful for organic stains like wine, juice, coffee, food, and pet messes.

I filled the sink with hot water, dissolved about half a scoop of OxiClean™, and submerged the baby quilt. After letting it soak for roughly two hours, I checked it before running it through the washing machine.

To my delight, the stains were gone before I even put the quilt in the washer. Completely gone. My baby quilt looked perfect again and I was thrilled.

I also added my daughter’s favorite shirt, one she’s worn for two years and long thought hopelessly stained. After the OxiClean soak, every stubborn mark vanished. I was amazed.

For a final test, I treated a memory foam bath mat that had been used as a doormat and looked permanently gray from dirt and stains. After washing it following an OxiClean treatment, I realized the mat was actually cream-colored underneath. All the stains were removed.

I can’t believe I hadn’t tried this sooner. OxiClean™ is versatile and useful for many tasks around the home. I plan to use it on carpets next. Other practical uses include:

  • Cleaning grout between tiles
  • Spot-cleaning carpet stains like wine
  • Removing tough baby stains
  • Cleaning couch cushions
  • Restoring sports uniforms to spotless condition

There are many ways to use OxiClean™ to tackle stains and boost cleaning results beyond detergent alone. OxiClean™ also invites users to share their experiences and before-and-after stories through its DearOxiClean feature.
