This week we began with the fifth module instead of the fourth because two groups meet on the same day and only one group can complete the fourth module at a time. To keep things moving, our group moved ahead and started module five; once we finish, the groups will swap modules.
Module five focuses on cake decoration, returning to techniques that add texture and depth. This session introduced bas-relief, an embossing method that creates a subtle three-dimensional effect. Bas-relief allows elements to stand slightly proud of the background, giving decorations a sculpted appearance while remaining relatively low-profile.
For the practical exercise we made a bas-relief sugar piece. Each of us received a reference image and had to translate it into bas-relief form. The process is enjoyable and a little like solving a puzzle: you decide what belongs in the background versus the foreground and build the piece layer by layer from back to front. It requires patience and care, but the finished result is very satisfying.
At the end of the day we prepared for the following lesson by making a few rosebuds. Next time we’ll learn how to form full roses from sugar paste. I’ve tried making sugar paste roses before without much success, so I’m curious and eager to see how the new techniques will improve my results.
