I love the nutty, chewy texture of steel-cut oats — I just don’t love the time they take to cook. Mornings are busy, and I rarely have 30 minutes to stand over a pot stirring oats.
Putting steel-cut oats in the slow cooker is my solution — set it the night before and wake up to a warm, ready breakfast. These Cherry Almond Steel Cut Oats are especially delightful when cherries are in season and ripe and juicy like the ones you can find now.
I like to prepare a batch on the weekend and store portions in jars for quick grab-and-go breakfasts during the week. It’s simple and satisfying — easy as cherry pie.

Ingredients
- 1 cup steel cut oats
- 2 cups vanilla almond milk
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 4 tablespoons almond butter
- 4 teaspoons chia seeds
- 4 teaspoons golden flax seeds
- 4 teaspoons sliced almonds
- 2 cups fresh sliced cherries
Instructions
- Coat the slow cooker with cooking spray or a thin layer of butter to prevent sticking.
- Combine the steel-cut oats, vanilla almond milk, water, and almond extract in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.
- When the oats are warm and cooked, spoon them into four mason jars or bowls. Top each serving with a spoonful of almond butter, a sprinkle of chia seeds, golden flax seeds, sliced almonds, and sliced cherries.
- Note: Don’t skip coating the slow cooker — if you forget, the oats can stick and make cleanup difficult.
