After a few years together, spontaneity often fades. That happens to many couples, and for women it can also be caused by hormonal changes. Pregnancy, childbirth, and aging can lead to vaginal dryness, which in turn may reduce the desire for spontaneous intimacy. The good news is that with a little attention and intention, you can restore excitement and closeness in your relationship.

Nate and I are navigating marriage for the second time, and we’re both determined to keep intimacy a priority. We deliberately try to keep things fresh and playful so our relationship continues to feel alive. Below are some of our favorite ways to reconnect and add spark to everyday life.

Five Ways to Spice Up Your Relationship

1. Just do it – even when you don’t feel like it. Intimacy can feel like an obligation sometimes, especially after a long day or when you’re absorbed in a project. Often I put down what I’m doing when Nate invites me to bed, and after a few quiet, attentive moments I find myself fully present and enjoying the connection.

2. Try something new – push beyond your usual routine. New experiences reignite curiosity and attraction: a passionate kiss on a blanket under the stars, a playful change to your bedroom routine, or a date night that involves an activity neither of you has done before. Novelty can be a powerful aphrodisiac.

3. Surprise him – little surprises keep things fun. Send a flirtatious text describing what you want to do later, snap a suggestive photo of a whipped cream canister with the caption “Dessert, anyone?”, or create a short romantic scavenger hunt. Thoughtful, playful surprises remind your partner that desire and affection are alive.

4. Wake him up gently – try a midnight or early-morning surprise if your schedules allow. This can be tougher with a newborn or young child in the house, but setting an alarm an hour early or waiting for a quiet moment can turn an ordinary morning into an intimate beginning to the day.

5. Give a sensual massage – a slow, teasing massage can be incredibly intimate. I love making and using a fragrant body butter for massages; the slow, tactile attention builds anticipation and brings you closer.

Making your own body butter is easier than you might expect, and a scented version like chocolate peppermint can be intoxicating. My blend uses coconut oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, sweet almond oil, a touch of vanilla, and peppermint essential oil for a warming-and-cooling effect. You can typically find these ingredients at natural food stores or specialty shops.

Description

This rich, aromatic body butter is designed for sensual massages. The chocolate and peppermint notes create a delicious scent while the moisturizing oils soften skin and improve glide during a massage.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1 cup raw cocoa butter
  • 2 oz beeswax
  • 1/2 cup sweet almond oil
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 30 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions

  1. In a double boiler over medium heat, melt the coconut oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax until the mixture becomes clear and fully liquid.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the sweet almond oil, vanilla extract, and peppermint essential oil until completely combined.
  3. Place the mixture in the refrigerator and allow it to cool fully. This can take around 40–45 minutes—check that the bottom of the bowl feels cold and the mixture is opaque.
  4. Once cooled, whip the mixture using an electric mixer on high for 7–8 minutes until soft peaks form and the texture becomes light and fluffy.
  5. Spoon the whipped body butter into clean jars or containers and seal. Store in a cool, dry place.

When I first made this, I learned the hard way that the oils must be completely cooled before whipping. If the mixture is still warm it won’t aerate. Allow it to become opaque and cool to the touch before whipping so it fluffs properly.

A sensual massage is a slow, attentive act that can build desire and strengthen emotional connection. Below are practical do’s and don’ts to make the experience comfortable and enjoyable for both partners.

Do’s & Don’ts for a Great Sensual Massage

Do: Create a calming environment. Eliminate distractions, dim the lights, and play soft, sensual music. A relaxed setting helps both partners focus on touch and connection.

Don’t: Apply cold product directly to the skin. Warm the body butter in your hands before spreading it to avoid an unpleasant chill.

Do: Have towels nearby. Body butter can be generous—keep towels close for comfort and cleanliness.

Do: Consider room temperature. Aim for a comfortable, slightly warm room so your partner won’t feel cold while undressed.

Don’t: Apply heavy pressure along the spine or over the lower back below the ribs. Be gentle around the kidneys and sensitive areas—focus on comfort and relaxation.

Do: Focus on common tension zones. Men often carry tension in the lower back while women commonly hold it in the neck and shoulders; adapt your pressure and strokes accordingly.

Do: Vary your strokes. Repetitive motions can lull your partner to sleep. Alternate between long gliding strokes and smaller, targeted movements to keep attention engaged.

Don’t: End the massage abruptly demanding reciprocity. A sensual massage is a gift of touch; letting it remain unreciprocated can be part of the tease and enhance anticipation.

Keeping your relationship spontaneous and affectionate requires attention, creativity, and the willingness to prioritize each other. Small rituals, new experiences, and simple acts of physical affection—like a well-timed massage—can keep intimacy strong and rewarding.
